Stockport District Heat Network was selected by the Department of Energy Security & Net Zero (DESNZ) to be one of only 6 towns and cities taking part in the Heat Network Advanced Zoning Programme. The development of district heating within Stockport and Greater Manchester will play a crucial role in meeting the climate and economic ambitions for the authorities.
Within a total zoning opportunity of around 200 GWh pa of heat demand, an initial town centre network is being prepared for procurement. The network, based on the town centre and extending South, will cover around 64 GWh pa of heat demand. The proposed low carbon heat sources under consideration include extracting heat from the sewer with heat pumps, along with thermal storage and back-up gas boilers. More than 80% of the network offtake will be from existing public buildings, and further off-take will be from the proposed multi-billion-pound development within the mayoral development corporation situated in the town centre. The commercialisation of the scheme is underway and, subject to approval gateway, will proceed to procurement of a development and funding partner in Summer 2025. The development and funding partner will then develop a full business case in advance of final approval gateway to start construction in the second half of 2026.
